This museum tells the story of the Order of St John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, a military order granted papal recognition in 1113. The Order's priory at Clerkenwell was their English headquarters; the 16th-century St John's Gate, which now houses the museum, was once the priory's southern entrance. Clerkenwell Road cuts through its former precinct.
